Consuming 1.5 ounces per day of pistachios and many other nuts may be beneficial for heart health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn't recommend cashews for this purpose, however, as they contain higher amounts of saturated fat. A study published in the "British Journal of Nutrition" in June 2007 found that study participants who followed a diet containing cashews for eight weeks didn't experience any improvements in their cholesterol levels compared to those who consumed no nuts. However, participants in another study, published in September 2008 in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," who consumed either 10 percent or 20 percent of their daily calories from pistachios, lowered both their total cholesterol and their LDL, or bad cholesterol, more than participants following a lower-fat diet containing no pistachios. The omega-3 fatty acids, unsaturated fats, vitamin E, fiber, plant sterols and l-arginine in nuts are responsible for their heart-health benefits, according to MayoClinic.com
